The alternator
The first trial assembly
After the alternator has been installed, I have started to work on the wire harness, as this one had to be remade, not only due to the alternator but also for the rear lighting of the tractor. I have first made a trial test of the alternator, connecting it with an outside battery and connecting a testing light on the "D+" wire, the other wire of the bulb being connected to the "+" of the battery. Just after the engine has been started, the bulb has gone off very quickly, indicating the battery charge.
The first test.
The driving belt of the dynamo being much larger than the one on the alternator, I have removed the pulley from the dynamo and have installed it on the alternator, saying to myself that even if the running speed of the alternator was not enough to be used at full, at least the battery will get some charge. I have manufactured a brakect with a piece of flat steel for the alternator as the support coming from foundry was not giving the proper alignment of the 3 pulleys (Engine, water pump and alternator). I have then made a temporary assembly, modified the bracket, remade a temporary test until every thing was in good working order.

Ready for the "Telethon 2008"
Every thing being installed, I have made a test with headlights and rotation signal light on, no problme, the battery charge is there. There is still a small problem I need to solve. I need to turn a new pulley for the alternator so that the charge will start without being necessary to push the rpm high at starting. Below is a photo taken during the "Téléthon 2008" during which we have sold potatoes and apples in the surrounding villages. It has been a bit cold and humid but every thing has been great.

The lighting completed and ready to be installed
The dynamo.
THe control box with the clearly visible burned wire.
The restoration of the lighting of the GRV The first step has been to find why the lighting equipement was not working. After having opened the control box, I have immediatly discovered that a wire of the circuit had burned. The wire harness of the rear lights was not existing, probably due to the short circuit and having been removed by the previous owner of the tractor. The rears lights were broken and having not been able to find identical ones, I have then decided to install some Hella lights. These lights has a style I like so no problem to installl them. The dynamo was no more producing current, the charging light staying desesperatly on. I have so searched for the cause of the this charging defect. I have followed fully the instruction of the excellent internet page
http://www.tract-old-engines.com/pannes_dyn.html and nothing, still no current. Time runnig so quickly, and the target being to participate to the "Téléthon", I have taken the decision after having tried several dynamo's to replace it with an alternator I already had in my files.
